Highlights:
The House overwhelmingly passed Rep. Scott Peters’s (D-Calif.) bipartisan bill (H.R.1948) to increase federal revenue streams to address toxic sewage, flood control, and water conservation in the Tijuana River, which traverses the U.S.-Mexico border. The funding is expected to completely cover the costs to repair and expand the border’s wastewater treatment plant.
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce passed the Wastewater Infrastructure Pollution Prevention and Environmental Safety (WIPPES) Act (H.R.2269). Reps. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) and Kevin Mullin (D-Calif.) reintroduced the bill to improve labeling for non-flushable products, preventing expensive damage to sewage systems and reducing trash flow into rivers and oceans. The bill’s Senate companion (S.1092), reintroduced by Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), passed the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation in May.
Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Ted Budd (R-N.C.) and Reps. Kim Schrier (D-Wash.) and David Valadeo (R-Calif.) introduced the National Prescribed Fire Act of 2025 (S.2015/H.R.3889). If passed, the bill would promote the use of prescribed burns on federal lands across the western and southeastern United States to mitigate wildfire risk.
