Founded by a bipartisan group of members of Congress, EESI has worked since 1984 to provide science-based information about environmental, energy, and climate change topics to policymakers and the public. EESI briefings, fact sheets, articles, newsletters, and podcasts are informative, objective, nonpartisan, and publicly available at www.eesi.org. For more than 40 years, Congressional staff working for senators and representatives along the entire political spectrum have counted on EESI for educational resources that help them understand complicated topics, analyze and evaluate proposals, and respond to constituent concerns.
EESI offers paid internships to undergraduate students pursuing studies in fields related to climate policy. EESI interns gain experience in policy, communications, research, and nonprofit management. The internship program is named for EESI co-founder Richard L. "Dick" Ottinger, a visionary political leader who passed away in February 2026. EESI also offers the Future Climate Leaders Scholarship, which is administered by UNCF (United Negro College Fund) and available to undergraduate students pursuing climate-relevant studies at Mid-Atlantic historically-black colleges and universities.
Throughout it's more than 40-year history, EESI has completed several programs focusing on specific issues, including beneficial electrification, on-bill financing for energy-efficency programs in rural communities, coastal resilience, building resilient and secure infrastructure, and clean school buses.
