Systems Biology of Bioenergy-Relevant Microbes to Enable Production of Next-Generation Biofuels – Due March 14, 2014
$8 million will be available in up to $1.5 million awards from the DOE Office of Science to support:

  1. Research to advance the development of promising new model organisms relevant to biofuels production
  2. Development of novel microbial functional capabilities and biosynthetic pathways relevant to the production of advanced biofuels and the development of strategies to overcome associated metabolic challenges resulting from pathway modification, and
  3. Development of novel analytical technologies or high-throughput screening approaches.

Department of the Interior – Fish and Wildlife Service
U.S. Standards Grant Program – Due July 8, 2014
$40 million will be available in up to $1 million awards to support public-private partnerships involving long-term protection, restoration, enhancement and/or establishment of wetlands in line with the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.

Department of the Navy – Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NEXWC)
NEXWC Broad Agency Announcement – Due February 11, 2014
White papers will be accepted for 6 topics under NEXWC’s annual broad agency announcement. Of note are Topic 2: Conservation of Natural Resources, which seeks to develop practices that ensure protection of sensitive resources and habitats while supporting the military’s operations, and Topic 6: Sustainability and Climate Change, which supports water conservation, greenhouse gas reductions, and reductions in chemical use and waste generation.

Environmental Protection Agency – Science to Achieve Results (STAR)
National Center for Sustainable Water Infrastructure – Due March 10, 2014
$4 million is expected to be awarded to create a centralized, open source center for:

  1. Facilitating technology transfer of open source water infrastructure models
  2. Sharing of green infrastructure tools and research advancements with local communities and stakeholders.

U.S. Department of Agriculture – National Institute of Food and Agriculture
Agricultural Food and Research Initiative: Food Security Challenge Area – Due June 12, 2014
$6 million will be made available for awards that focus on reducing crop and livestock losses in U.S. agricultural systems. Proposed projects should develop and extend sustainable, integrated management strategies that reduce pre- and post-harvest losses caused by diseases, insects, and weeds in crop and animal production systems, while maintaining or improving product quality and production efficiency.
