“The move to withdraw the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is wrongheaded, shortsighted, and self-defeating,” said EESI President Daniel Bresette. “Engaging in multilateral cooperation is an opportunity for leadership, not a sign of weakness.”
Yesterday, the Trump Administration announced its intention to withdraw from the seminal 1992 treaty governing international climate action, which has been ratified by 198 parties. The United States was the first developed country to join the treaty under President George H. W. Bush, after the Senate approved it unanimously. When the withdrawal becomes effective after one year, the United States will be the only country not a party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The United States previously withdrew from the Paris Agreement on January 20, 2025.
