U.N. Report Calls for Immediate, Sweeping Climate Action

"We are rapidly running out of time to avert the most catastrophic consequences of climate change,” said Daniel Bresette, executive director of the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), in response to a U.N. report released today about climate mitigation. “But with an all-in approach that starts with the rapid deployment of available technologies, it is still possible to limit warming to 1.5°C.”

U.N. Report Confirms Grave Threat of Climate Change

"The report released today by the United Nations is unequivocal in its findings—climate change presents a grave threat to the health and wellbeing of everything on this planet and will require accelerated action to avoid the loss of life, biodiversity, and infrastructure," said Daniel Bresette, executive director of the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI). "It makes crystal clear that there is an urgent need to cut our greenhouse gas emissions and prepare our communities to withstand the worsening impacts of climate change."

Climate Change Will Disrupt Oceans, Causing Chaos Says U.N.

Today, the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s leading body of climate scientists, released its Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (the cryosphere refers to areas containing frozen water, such as glaciers and snowcapped mountains). More than 100 scientists from 80 countries examined thousands of peer-reviewed studies to assess the impacts of climate change on the world’s oceans, as well as its coastal, polar, and mountain regions. Their conclusions were grim. “Global warming of 1 degree Celsius has already taken place, and the impacts are already being felt: rising sea levels, disappearing glaciers, more extreme weather, marine heatwaves…” noted EESI Executive Director Carol Werner. “Already severe, these impacts will only get worse as we continue to release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.”

National Climate Assessment Confirms We Have to Act

On November 23, 2018, the U.S. government released Volume II of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA), which confirms—once again—that climate change is already having adverse impacts on Americans. "How many wake-up calls do we need? Every new National Climate Assessment has built on the previous one, confirming that climate change is already happening, and that we need to act," said EESI Executive Director Carol Werner.

EESI Commends EPA for Toxics Progress, Urges More Focus on Mobile Sources

The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) applauds the recent Urban Air Toxics report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which documents a decrease in air toxics that are “known or suspected of causing cancer and can damage the immune, respiratory, neurological, reproductive, and developmental systems.” Thanks to EPA actions, toxic air pollutants have been reduced by millions of tons in the last 20 years. Yet, the report does not give sufficient consideration to toxic air emissions from gasoline, which may be getting worse. EESI urges, therefore, that emissions from gasoline vehicles be recognized as a potentially worsening public health threat by the EPA.
