Only 2 percent of 5,500 Charity Navigator-rated charities have achieved this feat

Monday, December 16, 2013 –The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) has earned a Four Star rating from Charity Navigator for the seventh time in a row , something only two percent of the 5,500 rated nonprofits have achieved. Charity Navigator, America’s leading charity evaluator, rates nonprofits based on their financial health and on 17 governance, transparency, and ethical measures. It only awards its top rating to the most fiscally responsible and transparent organizations, whose practices minimize the chance of unethical activities.

According to Charity Navigator President Ken Berger, "Only 2% of the charities we rate have received at least 7 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that the Environmental and Energy Study Institute outperforms most other charities in America. This 'exceptional' designation from Charity Navigator differentiates the Environmental and Energy Study Institute from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust."

EESI Board Chairman Jared Blum welcomed the accolade. "We take our fiduciary and governance responsibilities very seriously. Our supporters and funders can be confident that we are effective, responsible stewards of their money."

EESI is proud to have secured a perfect score of 70 for its accountability and transparency measures. EESI also scored highly for its fundraising efficiency: for every dollar raised, 84.4 cents go directly toward EESI's program activities to address climate change and advance sustainable energy solutions.

EESI uses its funds both efficiently and effectively. GreatNonprofits, the Yelp of nonprofits, has just announced that EESI is once again a Top-Rated Nonprofit, for the third year in a row . In fact, EESI is one of only just 35 Top-Rated nonprofits in Washington, D.C., out of a total of 19,810 D.C.-based organizations listed on the GreatNonprofits website. Across the United States, fewer than one percent of eligible nonprofits won a place on the 2013 Top-Rated List. EESI made the cut thanks to the many spectacular reviews submitted by its supporters : nearly all of them gave EESI Five Stars, the highest possible rating.

Jim Turner , for instance, wrote, "Before moving to my present position, I was a Congressional staffer for many years and worked for both political parties. Many of those years, I was working on topics within EESI's sphere of influence and regardless of my position, EESI was a trusted source of information for my colleagues on Capitol Hill and me, and a place I could turn to for more information. EESI has always had a very talented and knowledgeable group of people working for them. They are unparalleled in their primary niche of providing timely and objective information on a spectrum of environmental and energy topics to Capitol Hill."
