Research Supports Idea that Mid-level Ethanol Blends Are the Best Near-Term Fuel

The topic of E15 – a fuel blend of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline, has been cropping up in the news again.  This summer, Chicago City Council member and Finance Committee Chairman Edward Burke introduced a resolution that would have required mid- to larger gas stations in Chicago to sell E15, citing benefits to human health and consumers’ wallets.  While the issue of transitioning from just 10 percent ethanol to 15 percent ethanol in the fuel supply may seem like splitting hairs, it represents an approximately 50 percent increase in the total volume of renewable transportation fuels.  This would mean adding an additional roughly 7 billion gallons per year to the 13.5 billion gallons of ethanol that are expected to be blended into the gasoline supply in 2014, easily breaking through the E10 ‘blend wall’.  Not only would this decrease U.S. gasoline consumption by approximately 4.8 billion gallons of gasoline per year on an energy equivalent basis (or 254 million barrels of crude oil per year), research has shown that a 5 percent increase in ethanol usage reduces the total volume of toxic air pollutants and amount of greenhouse gases emitted.
