Massachusetts Releases Proposed Final Regulation on Biomass Energy

For the past few years, Massachusetts has been examining and debating whether and how renewable biomass electric power production can help it meet its energy needs and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in the years ahead. The result of this deliberation was released by the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) April 27. It sets a high bar for both biomass and biomass power producers.

While the versions of the FY2013 energy and water appropriations bills approved by the House and Senate appropriation committees last week differ in many respects – especially with regard to energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, they agree on the importance of advancing research and development for renewable biofuels.

Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels Forging Ahead

If renewable biofuel production is to grow to the scale needed to displace a significant portion of the world’s fossil petroleum dependence, establishing rigorous standards and third party certification systems to assure the environmental, social and economic sustainability of biofuels production will be critical. The Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels is trying to do just that.
