Enterprise for the Environment:
Results of Two-year Consensus-Building Project on Improving the Environmental Protection System

Friday, February 6, 1998
10:00 - 11:30 a.m., 2325 Rayburn House Office Building

You are invited to a briefing on the results of the Enterprise for the Environment (E4E), a consensus-building project aimed at improving the nation's environmental protection system.

On January 15, 1998, E4E released its final report entitled The Environmental Protection System in Transition: Toward a More Desirable Future. This report is the culmination of a two-year effort chaired by William D. Ruckelshaus, Chairman of Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) and former EPA Administrator. Over 80 participants endorsed the final report, including a bi-partisan group of Congressmen, governors, mayors, and state regulators; leaders from the environmental and business communities; and three other former EPA administrators (Doug Costle, William Reilly, and Lee Thomas).

E4E developed policy recommendations in three areas: 1) transforming EPA's regulatory system; 2) increasing the use of economic and other incentives to encourage continuous environmental improvement; and 3) promoting higher levels of responsibility, accountability, commitment, and stewardship in the private sector.

E4E is a collaborative project of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the Keystone Center and the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA). Speakers at the briefing will be: CSIS Project Director Karl Hausker; DeWitt John, Director of NAPA's Center for the Economy and the Environment; and Rich Innes, Director of Federal Affairs for BFI.

Copies of Environmental Protection System in Transition: Toward a More Desirable Future will be available at the briefing. Additional information on E4E is available at www.csis.org/e4e. Information on ordering the report can be obtained through the website, or by calling CSIS publications at 202/775-3119.

This briefing is co-sponsored by CSIS and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute. The briefing is open to the public with no reservations required. For more information, contact EESI at 202-622-1886.
