Fuel Cells: Opportunities and Challenges

The Environmental and Energy Study Institute sponsored a Congressional briefing with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) concerning fuel cell technology. The briefing featured a distinguished panel of industry and government speakers who covered all common fuel cell types and their commercial applications, as well as recent advances in fuel cell technology. The speakers discussed the potential of fuel cell technologies in improving energy efficiency and reducing U.S. dependence on imported petroleum while also reducing the environmental impacts associated with energy use by the transportation and stationary power sectors. The positive economic opportunities that the growing fuel cell industry affords was discussed and important fuel cell markets were identified.
The briefing featured the following expert speakers:

- Rita A. Bajura, Director, National Energy Technology Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy;
- Dr. Alan C. Lloyd, Chairman, California Air Resources Board; and
- George Rudins, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Coal and Power System, U.S. Department of Energy.
