Reframing the Energy Debate:

Lessons Learned from the National Energy Policy Initiative

Wednesday, June 26, 2002

3:00 – 4:30 p.m. , 2325 Rayburn House Office Building

As the House and Senate begin to reconcile their energy bills in conference, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute and the Rocky Mountain Institute invite you to a Congressional briefing to hear from bi-partisan energy experts who participated in the National Energy Policy Initiative (NEP Initiative).  The consensus developed from these experts on energy policy can provide insight and direction to the current Congressional energy debate.  Congressmen Mark Udall (D-CO) and Zach Wamp (R-TN), co-chairs of the House Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Caucus, will provide opening remarks.

Briefing Panel

Ř      Amory Lovins, CEO (Research), Rocky Mountain Institute

Ř      Jack Riggs, Executive Director, Program on Energy, the Environment and the Economy, The Aspen Institute; and former Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, U.S. Department of Energy

Ř      Bruce Smart, Retired Chairman and CEO, Continental Group; and former Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade

The NEP Initiative brought together a bi-partisan group of experts to discuss energy policy and to build a policy framework for the following priorities: transportation and mobility, electricity services, energy security, and climate change.  The NEP Initiative’s vision is to create “an energy system that will not run out, cannot be cut off, supports a vibrant economy, and safeguards our health and environment.”  The group reached consensus on an energy vision and developed a report that includes goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and policy options.  The full report can be found at www.nepinitiative.org.

The NEP Initiative is an independent effort using a transparent, inclusive and respectful process, run by two non-partisan non-profit groups and funded by seven foundations.  This briefing is open to the public and no reservations are required.  For more information about the briefing, please contact Beth Bleil of EESI at 202-662-1885 or bbleil@eesi.org.
