During its first decade, 1991–2001, USGS’s National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program completed assessments in 51 study units. Collectively the assessments characterize the overall health of the Nation’s surface-water and ground-water resources and address current and emerging water issues—a wealth of information that contributes to practical and effective water-resource management.  At the briefing, Tim Miller, Chief of the USGS Office of Water Quality, will discuss
the overarching themes found throughout all the study units' data and analyses with emphasis on and examples from the final 15 study unit reports just released.  Two of the final 15 study units, the New England Coastal Basins and the Great and Little Miami River Basins in Ohio , will be highlighted with presentations by the scientists responsible for the studies and by decision makers who have used the findings.

Copies of the new USGS report, Water Quality in the Nation’s Streams and Aquifers—Overview of Selected Findings, 1991-2001, and of local study unit summary reports will be available at the briefing.
