Fossil Fuel Subsidies and the Energy Security Act of 2003
Monday, May 12, 2003
1:00 – 2:30 p.m., 628 Dirksen Senate Office Building
The
Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), Friends of the Earth, and
the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) sponsored a
Congressional briefing on the potential costs of fossil fuel
subsidies to US taxpayers in the energy legislation currently before
Congress. The fossil fuel industry is one of the most profitable
industries in America, and the current legislation before Congress
will continue to help support its growth in the energy sector. The
use of oil, coal, and natural gas has provided most of America’s
energy over the last century, but has also been linked to severe
environmental degradation. At the same time, the fossil fuel
industry has received substantial taxpayer subsidies for decades. A
diverse panel of experts discussed the costs and implications of
these subsidies.
