Natural Gas Supply and Potential Price Implications
for the Northeast-Midwest
Monday, April 7, 2003
2:00 to 3:00 p.m., 121 Cannon House Office Building
Natural gas prices are high, and a
recent Energy Information Administration (EIA) report finds a strong
possibility of future price spikes in 2003. Although available
production capacity for 2003 appears ready to meet natural gas
demand, the surplus is so low following a cold winter -- at 10
percent of the projected 51.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d)
needed to meet production demand -- any sudden increase in demand or
drop in production could shoot prices upwards.
The
Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalitions and the
Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) were pleased to
host this briefing to discuss natural gas supply and potential price
implications for northeastern and midwestern states, and to review
options for ensuring a supply of natural gas at acceptable rates.
Briefing
Panel:
- Peter
Molinaro, Director, Government Affairs, The Dow Chemical
Company, a large region-based consumer of natural gas, will
provide introductory remarks and an overview of natural gas issues
facing the Northeast and Midwest.
Presentation
- Guy Caruso,
Administrator, US Department of Energy, Energy Information
Administration (EIA), will pay particular attention to natural
gas supplies, future demand projections, and the overall
complexities of an evolving market that has been relying on spot
and short-term contracting.
Presentation
- Melanie
Kenderdine, Vice President, Washington Operations, Gas
Technology Institute, will discuss natural gas supply concerns
and options available as well as regional issues in the context of
the national infrastructure.
Presentation
- Shirley Neff
(former Senate Energy Committee staff) and Herman Franssen
(formerly with Congressional Research Service and Chief Economist
for the International Energy Associates, Inc.) will discuss
alternative supply options, such as unconventional or “peaking
fuels” (LNG, CNG, methanol), and their infrastructure requirements
and transportation modes. Neff
