EPA Releases Modified Clean Air Rules for Boilers

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working for months to address technical concerns raised by boiler and incinerator operators concerning hazardous air pollution control regulations that the EPA had issued earlier this year. The regulations have been of particular concern to operators who use biomass fuel. On December 2, the EPA released modified rules for public comment.

EPA described the modified rules as “proposed reconsiderations for rules to reduce emissions of air pollutants from existing and new boilers and major and area source facilities, and from Commercial and Industrial Solid Waste Incinerators (CISWI).” The modified rules also include revisions to the Non-Hazardous Secondary Material (NHSM) Rule.

The EPA will be accepting public comment for 60 days from the date of publication in the Federal Register and plans to finalize these amendments by this spring.
